Moieties
Oct 19, 2007 6-8 thru Nov 15
cross mackenzie ceramic arts is pleased to announce an exhibition of works in clay and mixed media by 3 artists titled "Moieties"
Elizabeth Kendall, Judit Varga and Mila Kagan each explore the concept defined by the word "moieties" explained by Webster's as "indefinite parts" separate but enigmatic units making up a whole. Varga's work is cellular, referencing the skeletal remains of some unknown petrified plant or an enlarged view from under the microscope of a tortoise shell. Her clay mimics the brittle forms and textures of bone fragments or cartilage and express the beautiful geometric structures usually hidden under skin.
Kendall builds entire walls and vessels from individual organic units that have evolved from her functional pottery. She builds with bottomless ceramic cups which look more like starched fabric with their limp soft forms. The front window of the gallery will be completely veiled with the lace-like pattern made from the light reflections within each stacked "cup" unit.
Mila Kagan's mixed media pieces combine the unlikely materials of rubber, glass, porcelain and wire to surprising effect. Her "indefinite parts" or moieties, are unfamiliar and she uses each part to create a strange whole which recalls the vulnerability of astronauts out on a space walk or helpless newborns and their umbilicus cords.
